In 1981 after leaving Depeche Mode, Clarke was looking for a vocalist for some new songs he had written. Answering an ad in a British music mag, he was surprised to find it was Alison. The two joined forces and achieved worldwide fame with two smash releases, Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both.
