"New Romantic" is a term applied by the music press for the dressed-up, make-up wearing bands of the early eighties, and applied to the scene that emerged out of West End London. The theme was glammy extreme dressing, and dancing to Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Chic and lots of electronic dance music. Steve Strange worked as the doorman and developed a notorious reputation for turning away anyone whose appearance wasn't up to standard.
